A charming small Greek archaic limestone sculpture of a sitting embracing couple representing the wedding of Zeus and Hera. A votive piece to the temple of Zeus the Meilichios at Selinunt, Sicily, 6th/5th century BC. The reverse is inscribed AXE.
This sculpture reminds of Brâncusis famous sculpture "The Kiss" who, like all big artists, was obviously inspired and influenced by the ancient Greek art. About the saga of Zeus’s wedding please consult Greek mythology articles.
