Made around 1600, this dynamic and colourful horserider could be a rare princely toy or a a gaming piece.
The subject belongs to the late Renaissance iconography of horserider, derived from ancient roman models, and more or less idealized (fig. 1 – 3). Indeed our figure could be an allusion to the sacrifice of Horatius Cocles (fig. 4) or Marcus Curtius, both heroes of the Roman history.
Seems to be unique.
