Wonderful antique drawing measuring 50 x 40 cm without frame and 70 x 60 cm framed depicting an allegory of time.
The inventio derives from a masterpiece by Simon Vouet, currently in the museum of Berry, in Bourges, of which, as can be seen here, Michel Dorigny created the drawing, accompanying it with an exhaustive caption: Spes Amor atque Venus Saturnum Vellere Plumas Certant, raptorerm diripiuntque suum,
or Hope and Love fight with saturn to pluck his feathers and contend for the kidnapper.
The composition houses, in fact, an allegory in which Time (Saturn), depicted as an old man with wings, who, forced to the ground, is overwhelmed by two women, personifications of Venus (goddess of love) and of Hope, who they try together with Cupid, to tear off his wings, to defeat him.
Above them two angels with trumpets celebrate their triumph, representing the strength of feelings with respect to oblivion.
