This beautiful well preserved painting is by the hand of Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. We see a seated Virgin and Child, with Saint John Baptist kneeling on the left, a still life of fruits on a buffet on the right.
Painted on oak panel.
Housed in the original 16th century frame measuring 119 on 86 cm.
Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder was born in Bruges, Flanders.
He became master of the Guild of Saint Luke of Bruges on 20 January 1516. In 1559 he was commissioned to provide designs for the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold in the Church of Our lady in Bruges. In 1561 he was commissioned to complete a triptych of the Passion of Christ that had been commenced by the prominent painter Bernard van Orley, now still in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges thanks to Margaret of Parma. This painting had remained unfinished after the death of Van Orley in 1542.
His son Marcus the Younger became a prominent court painter at the English court.
We like to thank Dr. Jan de Maere for his expertise after inspection of the original.
