The game of chess - Gerard Portielje (1856-1929)

Gerard Portielje is one of the best Romantic painters in Belgium during the 19th century. He is the son of Jan Portielje and the brother of Edward Portielje. Both painters active in Antwerp. Our painting is painted on canvas and is housed in a brown 19th century style frame measuring 70 x 84 cm.
The painting is in very good condition and is very sharp in details. Gerard Portielje always made portraits of town people in contemporary interiors. He he displayed a game of chess between the town priest and probably the doctor or the notary.
