This enigmatic painting submerges us in a silent world.
It is a mystery why an artist who lived the major part of his life in Rome was so strongly impressed by the deserted marshlands to the SE of the Eternal City, to such an extend that he chose these as his favourite subject, the trademark of his Symbolist art.
This is clearly one of his best paintings. His vertical compositions are very rare.
