17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Saint Catherine of Alexandria, carved in the round, in polychrome gilded wood from the late 16th century.
The Saint is in a standing position, slightly swaying. She is dressed "in the antique", a section of her coat is tied over her shoulder.
In her left hand she holds the instrument of her martyrdom: a wheel.
Her face is finely sculpted and styled in an elegant bun.
A very beautiful "sgraffiato" polychromy decorates this Italian sculpture.
Italy, Siena
Original polychromy
Period late 16th century
