A large bronze incense burner shaped as a mouse on a tuber, Japan, 19th c.

A large bronze incense burner with brown patina representing a mouse standing on a tuber, the latter surmounting the cover which is pierced with holes and signed on the reverse. Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912), 19th century.

The tuber on which the rodent is perched is undoubtedly by the shape of the leaves a radish and not, although bifid, a ginseng.

Although the rat, even more than the mouse, is perceived in Asia more positively than in the West as a symbol of intelligence (see the corresponding Chinese zodiacal sign) and as a wise accumulator of wealth, which is also symbolized here by the association of the small rodent and its huge trophy, it is obviously a small country mouse and not a rat that the artist wanted to represent as evidenced by the proportional size of the animal (compared to the radish), the large size of the ears at the end of the slender muzzle, the slender body and not squat in the torso, the thin and small legs and the long whiskers.
