A figure of Guanyin, the goddess of compassion, powerfully cast in bronze with hands in the posture of dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation and spiritual achievement, on its separate original lotus stand also in bronze, with remains of gilt lacquer, Ming dynasty, 16 / 17th century.
This statue endowed with of great serenity of expression can be dated by its style from the end of the 16th century or the early 17th century, the reign of Wanli emperor (1572-1620). Together the base and the statue itself weigh an impressive 8.5 kg, a characteristic typical of some qualitative Chinese bronzes from the Ming dynasty.
This statue can be compared for its style and period to a large 80 cm bronze figure of mahasthamaprapta sold with Nagel on December 9, 2020, lot 49
