Georges van den Bos was born in Ghent in 1853 and studied at the school of art there, then in Brussels before completing his training in Paris. His paintings are included in several collections including the Museum of Ghent. He died in Ghent in 1911.

Some of his paintings are more romantic style, this painting is probably of a later date in his career. It is an early example of impressionisme. To be compared with paintings of Emile Claus circa 1900.
He might even have been influenced by this well know painter also active in Ghent at that time...
