Beautiful and rare Japanese kodansu in exceptional condition. Entirely covered with ivory panels, in the pure shibayma style, richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl and coral with a floral decoration, a couple of pigeons and a hanging lantern. The interior of the door features a couple of butterflies and their young. Three drawers complete the interior with the lacquered maple decor on a background of brown lacquer and gold powder. The panels are framed by chopsticks imitating bamboo as well as the handle are in shibuishi (an alloy of silver and copper). The signature, Masa Hisa, is on the back of the cabinet in a mother of pearl cartouche. Period: Meiji (1868-1912) late 19th century.
