Orange glazed hand formed tea bowl by Otagaki Rengetsu and inscribed with one of her poems.

Born with the given name Nobu and adopted by the Otagaki family, she suffered a series of tragedies during the first part of her life which led her to become a Buddhist nun, taking Rengetsu (Lotus Moon), as her Buddhist name. In order to make a living, she made pottery inscribed with her poems and is widely regarded as one of the greatest Japanese poets of the 19th century.
