Marten Rijckaert (1587- 1631)

This oil on panel picture depicts two people resting by the side of a path, greeted by a hiker in an imaginary forest landscape with a waterfall and rocks.Marten Rijckaert was a Flemish landscape painter. His sparse surviving works mainly depict imaginary landscapes with forests, often with waterfalls, rocks, ruins, architecture and small human figures.
Rijckaert’s work shows similarities with that of the Antwerp painter Joos de Momper and also to that of Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel.
