Pair of paintings by Pieter Verdussen and Jasper Broers.
Representing galant scenes with orientals in an Italianated landscape with classical monuments.
We like to thank Dr. Jan de Maere for his expertise.
Both Antwerp artists painted battle scenes and animated landscapes in the tradition of the dutch painters Frans van der Meulen, Philips Wouwerman, Karel Breydel and Jan van Huchtenburg. Pieter Verdussen was more skilled in landscape rendering, while Jasper Broers, his brother in law, painted figures in a more dynamic and lively manner. Also Catharina Verdussen, who became a member of the Antwerp guild in the same year as her brother (1697). She was involved in the studio output of the Verdussen-Broers family business. Peter Verdussen is the father of the battle painter Jan Peeter Verdussen.
Both paintings are housed in new black 17th century style frames by Gehring in amsterdam.
