Roman bronze Venus Aphrodite
Roman Art - 1st Century B.C.
Provenance : Property from the Estate of Molly and Leon Lyon, Newport Beach, California. Acquired from Simone de Montbrison, Paris in 1970.
Of the Capitoline type, Venus Aphrodite is depicted standing naked and turning to the left with the weight on her left leg, with her right leg relaxed and bent at the knee. Arm bands remain at the place where her now missing arms would have been joined - these being separately cast. She wears a diadem, and her elaborate hair is tied in a top-knot, with a chignon at the base.
