Lecomte du Noüy first trained in Paris, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There he studied with major painters such as Charles Gleyre, Emile Signol and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Traditionnally, painters would travel to Rome in order to study the antiques and the masters of the Italian Renaissance. However, Lecomte du Noüy, just like more and more if his contemporaries, decided to travel to Orient instead.
The model of this portrait is the artist’s friend Urbain Bourgeois, Bourgeois was a painter himself. The both participated to the Prix de Rome in 1871.
