Exceptional cameo on agate featuring three colors. The profiled bust looking toward the right displays a young woman with hair wrapped in grape vines. A ram’s head is set on her collar bone. The artist sculpted different veins of this stone to represent the profile of a Bacchante who followed along in Dionysus’ cortege. This agate is of exceptional quality, presenting inclusions of different colors. The gold mounting is decorated with intricately sculpted acanthus leaves. The cameo can be worn as a brooch or set on a chain to be a pendant using the two rings on the back. The execution of this cameo is comparable to the work of Nicola Morelli (1771-1838), who was active during the beginning of the 19th century.
