Kôgô – Very fine model of a very small lacquer box. On the top of the cover, madarin ducks on a river from a rocky out-crop beside a flowering Ume (apricot tree) on the bank. Mother of pearl, gold, silver and coral inlays. Nashiji inside. 5.5 x 5.5 x 2,7 cm. Japon Edo (1603-1868) 18th century. Pairing for life, mandarin ducks serve as a symbol of conjugal fidelity in both China and Japan.
