Walnut Wardrobe Bergamo 17th Century

Bergamasco wardrobe in solid walnut, made in the seventeenth century, measuring 240 x 165 x 65 cm, refined and elegant in every part including the superb construction of the hat.

This feature almost always present in the flaps and in the trumeaux is really rare in the wardrobes.

The structure of this furniture is a classic Renaissance; The decorations are also classic in style; the cantilever feet support a slightly rounded base with egg motifs which, running towards the center, create two volutes at the intersection.

From each of the two shelves that decorate the wardrobe sideways, the high band that separates the doors from the hat descends along the two lateral pilasters an elongated carving in strong relief depicting two children who in playful, moving and winking poses seem to support the wardrobe itself with one hand; from a mask hangs an exuberant leaf motif rich in fruit interrupted by ribbons and ending in a bow.

The doors are divided into eight square mirrors with shaped frames in turn sculpted by as many frames carved with acanthus leaf motifs.

In each central part, two thin concentric frames create a rigorously symmetrical motif with a broken perimeter without curves.

A small frame divides the body with doors from the smooth band that highlights the hat with a strong projection at the bottom decorated with denticles replaced in the shelf by rectangular molded elements alternated with small carved wooden decorations.

Delicate and elegant in the same way, a very rare feature for the time, the decoration on the sides made up of eight equal squares highlighted by two concentric frames; all these qualities, considering the perfection in the construction of the furniture, makes me think without a shadow of a doubt of a commission made for a noble and patrician family of the time.

The paintings and works of art published here are my exclusive property and therefore are always available to be viewed, by appointment, in my exhibition sites located in Sanremo and Brescia.
