Oil on panel.
Our painter, a French artist from the second half of the 17th century, draws on the engraving of Lucas Vorsterman (Zaltbommel 1595 – Anvers 1675) produced in 1620 based on the composition by Peter Paul Rubens kept at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Loyal to his model, our painter has made the rare choice of a delicate colour palette, ideal for illustrating the tenderness of the scene. In the opening of a structured decor and against brown/beige and grey/blue backgrounds, pinks, mauves and shades of white attune in the eye of the beholder.
The network of hairline cracks due to age is certain to enchant connoisseurs.
We have chosen to present our Holy Family to you in a moulded and blackened wood frame also known as a "cassetta". Italy, late 17th century.
