Pair of japonese lanterns, begining of the XIXth century

Pair of Buddhist temple lanterns in copper and golden brass, they can be suspended or putted down.
In Japan, the "toro" were originally employed in buddhist temples only, they were used to light the pathways and considered as an offering to Buddha. It was during the Heian (794-1185) period that they started to be used in shinto sanctuary and private homes.
