Kiseruzutsu - Pipe case. Stag horn carved with black and polychrome lacquer, with the pipe, his Ojime and a beautiful Maekanagu of coal faggot. The tabako-ire (tabaco pouch) of leather. Japan Edo 19th.
Tobacco has arrived in Japan with the Portuguese around 1542. The Japanese never went out without their pipes and tobacco ; they putted them in the Kiseruzutsu (pipe case) and the tabaro-ire (tabaco pouch). The pipe case can be in lacquer, basketry, wood, ivory or deer horn. These are generally the work of the artist, often with sense of humor and finely sculpted.
