We have been unable to identify the scene or the characters represented here, they do not correspond to any known figure from the artist’s répertoire (see Bernard Populus, Claude Gillot (1673-1722).Catalogue de l’œuvre gravé, Paris 1930). The composition, ambitious, shows four actors in costume, a landscape background with rocks, columns and fountains, and in the upper part a surbased arch, with a rococo cartouche, could be a discarded frontispiece project. The pink wash, frequently used by the artist, has here an important part.
After a first-hand inspection, Mrs Jennifer Tonkovich kindly confirmed the attribution, as did Mr Martin Eidelberg from a digital image. We are grateful to them for their help.
