A rare lathe turned ivory box with silver mounts. The densely pierced mounts decorated with foliage.
Sri Lanka, late 16th / early 17th century.
Measures 7.5 x 7 x 6.5cm.
Provenance: Private collection Germany, acquired 1969-72 in Sri Lanka by the previous owner whilst working in development assistance.
A larger more decorative example was sold in Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 25 October 2017 for £106,250, of which there are two comparables; one in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. no.13-1896) and the other in the Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Berlin (inv. no.Nr. MIK I 384).
