Student of J.L Gérome. In Paris his friends E.Degas, G Boldini, A Stevens and J.Sergent. At salons, he exhibits large portraits. During the 1890s, the Helleu couple became essential in English and French society.
From 1902. He worked in the United States where his reputation as a portrait painter had preceded him.
