Ivory Tankard : Dionysian Feast - Germany 19th

Ivory tankard : Dionysian feast. Exceptional and important ivory mug Exceptional in size and quality of execution. Dionysian festive scene. The Dionysias were annual religious festivities dedicated to the god Dionysus in ancient Greece. In Greek mythology, Dionysus is the god of the vine, of wine and its excesses, of madness and excess. The characters represented are Dionysus accompanied by maenads, satyrs with horns and goat legs (one of them happens to be the god Pan with his famous flute), and Cupid lovers. A panther below who is watered with wine by a Love, and who is typically a Dionysian animal (he serves as a mount for Dionysus during his journey to India).
