Léon-Pierre-Urbain BOURGEOIS, born in Nevers in 1842, died in Paris in 1911.
Painter of historical subjects as well as portraits, pupil of Cornu, Flandrin and Cabanel. 2nd Prize of the Prix de Rome in 1863 ("Joseph being recognized by his brothers"), and in 1867 ("murder of Laïus by Oedipus"). At the Salon from 1865 ("Samuel's shadow"), in 1876 ("Jesus Christ brought down from the cross"), in 1878 ("Justinian, emperor of the East").
