This posture represents the Enlightenment of Buddha, and holds a great place in the Thai imagery, because it symbolizes the victory over Mâra, god of the desires, death and the demons. He thus reaches the enlightenment under the tree of the Bodhi.
This gesture appears to the Thai people as the illustration of the greatest of miracles, and represents the peak of Buddha's life.
