Pair of large terracotta sculptures from the Renaissance period depicting two singing angels. Lombardy, 16th century.
Already during the fifteenth century in Lombardy the working of terracotta spreads, especially in the cities of Cremona and Brescia: linked by close artistic relationships although belonging to different states (Brescia was part of the Republic of Venice,
Cremona of the Duchy of Milan), somehow had to recognize themselves similar in the common condition of important capitals both on the border, simultaneously engaged in a process of modernization of civil and, above all, religious buildings.
In the middle of the century, two terracotta and stucco modeling workshops are identified in the Brescia area, run by two masters identified as the Master of the Madonna of the mouse and the Master of the singing angels. The latter's autography has been recognized
dal Galli in a vast collection of terracotta works scattered around various European museums, attributable to the same hand that produced many similar works concentrated in the Brescia area.
His workshop seems to have also inspired our two singing angels for the high quality level, the technically virtuous hand, with a strong personality and sensitive to the naturalness of the subjects.
