An important Indo-Portuguese sculptural group of the Santana Mestra - a depiction of Saint Anne teaching Mary to read as a child - in carved, polychrome painted and gilt wood with faces, hands and feet carved in ivory.
The saint is represented as a matron, seated in a Portuguese style chair decorated with Indian motifs and surmounted by a baroque scallop, while she is engaged in teaching the young Virgin Mary standing next to her.
