Fruitwood flask with portraits & beasts. French, late 16th century.

A rare fruitwood flask, the body carved with miniature bejewelled portraits of a man & a woman. The sides are applied with with grotesque mascarons & the nozzle with the head of Hermes & a beast.

French, late 16th century.

Measures 12.5 x 6 x 3cm.

A similar portrait of a woman, carved from fruitwood & dated to 1575 - 1600 can be found in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
