Japanese Lacquered Writing Box - Suzuri Bako

On a black lacquer base (ro-iro) the lid is rounded in shape (kabesubuta zukuri). The decoration, taken from a similar writing box by Hon'ami Koetsu (1558-1637), represents a peasant carrying a bundle of maki-e with brown lacquer on his back and finely chiseled mother-of-pearl on his face, arms and legs. The interior with its ink stone (suzuri) and its water pourer (mizu-ire) presents a decoration known as "spring geminations" in mak-e, mother-of-pearl and lead.
(Namiki pen not included).
