Bust of the Virgin - Lower Rhine, Late 15th / early 16th century

This beautiful bust of the Virgin carved in stone presents an important part of its original polychromy. Capped with a veil folded over her chest, she melancholy tilts her face to the left, looking down. Her expression of great intensity as well as her heavily lidded eyes are reminiscent of the polychrome oak sculptures produced in Lower Rhine in the end of the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century.
