This superb bas-relief in alabaster points out with its quite exceptional dimensions. This material, rarely worked on such a large scale, encountered a large success amongst patrons of the Gothic period. Sculpted by the most famous masters of the time, it adorns the tombs of dignitaries and, in the form of altarpieces, churches of the time. Our bas-relief is an emanation of this tradition which is illustrated between Flanders and Germany at the end of the medieval period under the chisel of the famous Master of Rimini. As in the latter's work, our Deposition with its iconography, its expressiveness, its taste for the detail and the anecdote is part of the Gothic tradition of the North of Europe, while integrating certain characteristics of the 16th century Italian art, echoing through its framing, its tumult and its wet drapes to the art of a Della Porta.
