This important pietra dura was made in Italy during the 17th century. Our piece is a very fine example of this lapidary marquetry technique invented by the Florentines a few decades earlier.
In the centre of it is a poly-lobed figure made of tri-coloured spikes. The alternation of black, green and white marbles on a cherry-red background gives an incredibly modern result. In addition to this, the simplicity of the motifs, reduced to the necessary aesthetics, allows this piece to blend perfectly with a contemporary interior.
Note that the marble rim was added later to enlarge the plate and give it table dimensions.
