A Indo-Portuguese cabinet, late 16th century

India, Northern Province of the Portuguese State of India, probably Thane (present-day Mumbai), late 16th century

This piece of furniture is inspired by a European model, a portable cabinet known in Germany under the name of Schreibtisch. The opening front offers a surface for writing, while revealing the numerous drawers. This cabinet, or portable desk, is among the most prestigious pieces of storage furniture from the 16th century. Much valuated in Europe due to their colorful aesthetics but also to their technical perfection, this type of furniture was widespread both in noble and patrician estates of Europe but also among officials and wealthy merchants, especially those traveling to Asia. The production of this type of furniture was based in the north-west of India, namely Gujarat and Sindh, which were long-time production centers for luxury goods and which influenced the other centers further south like around the city of Thane.
