Faustina Maior - Italy, second half of XVIII century

Marble head representing Faustina the Elder
Italy, second half of XVIII century
52 cm

« Le seul moyen que nous avons d’être grands, voire inimitables si c’est possible, est d’imiter les Anciens ». Winckelman

This marble head representing Faustina Maior or Faustina the Elder (105-140 dc) wife of emperor Antonino il Pio, is here represented according to the aesthetic canons typical of neoclassicism.

The elaborate hairstyle is described with elegant precision; the classic impassiveness of the face is free from excess and passionate expressions.

By rejecting the frivolous beauty of Rococo and the Baroque emphasis, the artist creates a timeless portrait : a nostalgic evocation of perfect beauty, aesthetic echoes of ancient virtue.

« À mon arrivée à Rome, je compris qu'il n'y avait d'autre maître à suivre que l'antique et la nature. »
Johan Tobias Sergel
