Exceptional carved wood coat-of-arms

Diameter : 92 cm

Polychrome and gilt wood.

Exceptional polychrome and gilt carved wood relief bearing the coat-of-arms of a Spanish family. The shield is backed against a cut-out leather motif on a laurel wreath and is crowned by a bull head.

Quaterly, first quarter chequy Gules and Argent, second quarter Azure with a castle, impaling, Azure, a lion rampant Or with three fleur-de-lys Or, third quarter chequy Gules and vair, fourth quarter, party per saltire first and fourth Azure with a cauldron Or and second and third Or with tree trunks (or hermine, the charge is difficult to read).

The arms of the earls of Luna, title established by king Henry IV of Castile for the house of Quiñones, can be recognized on the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter appears to present the arms of the earls of Teba belonging to the house of Guzmán. As for the 2nd quarter, it can be attributed to a branch of the Castilian royal family such as the house of Cerda whose arms are identical.

This amazing tondo illustrates the union of four powerful families from Castile and León and whose titles are still in use today. These dynastic houses have given important figures to Spanish history but also to French history as the 20th countess of Teba was empress Eugénie (1826-1920) wife of Napoléon III.

This remarkable relief tondo probably took place inside the state room of a Spanish palace. From the important size of this piece we can guess the monumental proportions of the architecture in which it took place. With its vivid colors, the coat-of-arms could draw the gaze of the guest and expose at a glance the prestigious ancestry of his host.
