Meido – A Japanese okimono of a Dutchman with child

Large Japanese ivory Okimono depicting a character with a child who is playing with a tambourine; uncommon and rare satirical subject of exceptional size.

Peculiar depiction of a character of European appearance with a funny and amused expression on his face who is holding a child with similar Western features, who is playing with a tambourine.

Meido’s great craftsmanship makes this character stand out in that all possible objects and symbols of the Japanese culture are represented. He is wearing a Kimono and getas and seems to be standing in a precarious position, almost restless. A change purse, a tobacco pouch/tin with a Netsuke depicting Okame’s face, a pumpkin-shaped container and a large fan can be appreciated.

Embossed signature Meido kore zo under base; an example of Tokyo School’s realism. An Okimono by this very artist was sold by the auction Christie’s see: Christie’s London sale 6099 11th May 2011.

Meiji Period second half 19th century
