A Japanese ivory netsuke of a Shoki

A Japanese ivory netsuke of Shoki with an oni on his hat, one of the most classic subject, in this case Shoki is portrayed in Dutch clothes.

In this netsuke there is a mix of irony and history, with a connection to the legend where the oni is always chased by Shoki, but in this case he does not realize oni it’s on his hat, a clear reference to the stupidity of the invading people.
