A rare perfume or incense burner in the shape of a winged dragon, whereby the dragon's body serves to contain oil and by means of a wick through the wide open mouth, the underside of the tail - which serves as a recipient for the fragrance - could be heated. As a result of the heating, the fragrance would spread across the room.
Beautifully executed in cast, patinated and chiseled bronze, mounted on a gilt bronze base with acanthus leaves. At the underside of the base there is a name written in ink, possibly of the maker or retailer.
France. 1st half of the 19th century.
