Suisen – A Japanese okimono of Taira no Tadamori

Extraordinary and rare small ivory okimono depicting the Tadamori legend.

The incredible miniaturization of the hands, the feet, the hat with the ropes, moved and pulled clothes, the suffering faces, the musculature, the oil coming out of the pitcher and the long katana, leave us stunned.

Suisen signature under the oil container.

Incredible mint condition despite its complicated carving with many thin and delicate details.

The oil thief, the story of a mysterious monster. Emperor Shirakawa was troubled by the appearance of a demon in the forest around the temple. It is reported that the demon had a spiked head with a scared expression. The emperor ordered the samurai Taira no Tadamori (1096 – 1153) to fight the creature and defeat it. Tadamori, instead of facing the demon, saw a harmless monk wearing a straw hat and carrying a lantern. He discovered that the impoverished monk used to crawl through the woods at night stealing a little oil from each of the lanterns standing between trees. Tadamori arrested the oil thief and he was rewarded by the Emperor for his courage. The story was popular in the Edo period and was the subject of numerous kabuki dramas.
