Komei – A Japanese Benkei and the bell

A very unusual booxwood okimono of Benkei with the bell. Musashibou Benkei was a semi-legendary warrior monk of the 12th century, who was associated with Minamoto no Yoshitsune in numerous stories, described as strong, courageous, cunning and good-natured and is certainly a product of the imagination.

One of Benkei’s most famous stories as a priest take away the bell from the temple of Miidera. According to one version the bell did not sound and Benkei threw it off the mountain and rolled back to Miidera.

Engraved Komei signature under the base.
