Cast and carved bronze dish with brown patina representing the Hell of the Luxurious according to Dante's Inferno.
Signed on the face to the edge Jean Garnier.
Circa 1864.
The Inferno dei Luxuriuri after Dante's Inferno, we find in the center Paolo and Francesca are embraced. They are surrounded by a circle of the damned driven by a whirlwind. Each damned has a different aspect. The work is reminiscent of Michelangelo and The Last Judgement.
A similar model can be found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and another in the Musée d'Orsay.
