Composition created with 16th century azulejos in Islamic style with geometric patterns.
There are two type of azulejos in the composition: First the relief ones, produced in the "cuenca" technique. The flat white and black ones are "alicatados" meaning they were cut with pliers. Moorish tiles were incorporated in Portuguese palatial and religious architecture in Portugal in the beginning of 1500, thanks to King D. Manuel I.
Intricate compositions using Moorish tiles can be found in the Sintra National Palace, Old Church of Coimbra and various important palaces and churches throughout Portugal.
