Sea and mythological scenes were very characteristic in Portugal in the 18th century normally applied in palaces
The blue and white colors is an influence by Chinese porcelain and delft tiles and become fashion in the 18th century.
Tiles panels can be wooden frame as a painting or embedded directly on to the wall. Usually displayed in the living room or dining room, interior or external gardens, verandas etc.
This panel is a part of several panels that decorate a Palace, (15 Km from Lisbon).
King D. João V (1689 to 1750), decided to build a Basilic, Monastery and a Royal Palace in Mafra, from 1717 to 1730, with the gold taken from Brazil.
Several times he travelled from Lisbon to Mafra (40 Km from Lisbon) and he like to rest in a Palace for the night in the way there.
Both the mythologic scenes and the hunting scenes, were embedded on the several walls of the gardens and waterfalls.
