In 1811, Freycinet was promoted to frigate captain and, on June 6, 1814, he married Rose Marie Pinon. On May 27, 1817, he received the mission to lead an expedition of circumnavigation "in order to determine the figure of the globe, to study Earth's magnetism and to collect all the objects of natural history which could contribute to the advancement of the science ".
Commanding Urania, with Louis Isidore Duperrey as second, he weighed anchor in Toulon on September 17, 1817, with 126 men on board, including several scientists, Jacques Arago, Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré, the gardener Antoine Guichenot, the doctor Jean René Constant Quoy, gardeners, designers and a stowaway.
This stowaway, soon discovered, is none other than Rose, his wife, dressed as a man and who will not resume his female clothes until after passing Gibraltar.
On board, she demonstrates a moral ascendancy over the crew, never takes care of scientific work but cheers everyone up with her guitar recitals. The names of Pointe Rose and Anse Rose were given to two parts of the coast which touch Cape Freycinet in Australia; the name of Rose was given by her husband to an island discovered on October 21, 1819 east of the archipelago of Navigators (Samoa): "I called it Rose Island, from the name of a person who m 'is extremely expensive,' he wrote in the logbook.
As for Rose, she writes: “So that's it, here is my name attached to a small corner of the globe; very small, indeed, because the envious will perhaps only give it the name of islet. "
Baptism of natives aboard Urania in the Hawaiian archipelago in 1819 Louis de Freycinet's journey was a scientific success.
