Louis XV Period canapé From the Collection of Baron James de Rothschild

This canapé with curved seat backs à la Reine was made out of natural beech wood. This seat has a great deal of movement and are richly molded and carved with open shells, foliage, and scrolls. The feet are joined by an X-stretcher and it is finely sculpted.
This canapé is indisputably the work of a great master carpenter of the Louis XV period. The movement carved by the sculptor, balance of the proportions, highest quality of beech wood, and the perfect dimension of the opening of the arms resembles the work of René Cresson, who was a famous carpenter (specialized in chairs), and became a master in 1738.
Crafted in Paris, circa 1740, middle of the Louis XV period
It is in a very good state of conservation. The wood was reassembled and recolored according to the regles de l’art. All the pieces of wood are original expect for a few feet.
