Madonna and Child with Saint Catherine '500 Italian School

Oil painting on wood, with dimensions of 80 x 60 cm without frame and 110 x 90 cm with splendid coeval frame, depicting a religious scene from the Lombard school of the mid-16th century.

We can see how the author of this sacred subject, in which the presence of cues taken from everyday life and from the observation of natural data is relevant, owes its fame precisely to the genre paintings in which card players are protagonists, interiors cooking, kids with bags, girls wrapped in nature, however themes drawn from everyday life. What is striking in the way in which the painter interprets his subjects is the strong human participation and the desire to confer moral dignity on poor themes, without the irony or paternalistic tones typical instead of the Emilian tradition.

A very personal artist, dominated by a sense of sense of color, from its perception and its visibility, certainly not betrayed by scorching ethical sentiments or aesthetic sensitivity, it approaches the poetics and aesthetics of a great Lombard painter like Luca Mombello (Orzivecchi 1518 - 1588).

This is a very important iconographic subject in which the co-protagonist of the work is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the girl of royal lineage, who for these reasons is portrayed in princely clothes and with her hair well braided with a string of pearls. The young woman is receiving the wedding ring from Jesus, a re-enactment of a vision she had before the martyrdom with the gear wheel; story that recalls a young Saint Catherine who refusing to idolize pagan idols for her Christian faith is forced to undergo numerous tortures including the gear wheel, but she was then miraculously saved by a lightning bolt thrown by the Lord who destroyed the terrible instrument of torture.
