Nicolaes van Suchtelen
Hoorn 1656 – 1715 Hoorn (?)
Flower still life in a glass vase
Oil on canvas : 65,1 X 52,4 cm
Signed and dated lower right “Suchtelen fe: 1675”
The intricate initials of his first name can be deciphered with great difficulty; in my opinion they should indeed be read as “NA”
Frame : 82,7 X 70,0 cm
I would like to thank Dr. Fred Meijer who has proposed the attribution of our van Suchtelen painting to Nicolaes
Nicoalaes van Suchtelen later became burgomaster of Hoorn. He was influenced by Jacob Rotius and by Abraham Mignon.
This stunning Baroque flower still life contains a vivid micro cosmos of diverse insects: butterflies, mots, dragonflies, a spider, a fly, a caterpillar, a snail and a grasshopper.
